22nd Jan 2010 13:20 Stephani Lovei sat, staring at her blank white room. With her blank white walls and her blank ceiling.
She just sat there staring. Thinking. She was thinking about how she was so bored in this empty room, when an idea hit her. She had paint. She reached under her bed to grab the buckets of paint. She pulled out five colors, five paint brushes and a kitchen timer.
???Mom!??? She yelled out her plain white door. Sitting next to her plain white lightswitch, on her plain, white wall.
???Yeah?!??? Her mom replied.
???I am painting, don???t come in!???
???Okay! Put on your paint clothes, they are in the living room!???
???Thanks!??? She ran in to the living room and grabbed the big white T-Shirt and the baggy black pants. She pulled them on and put her hair up into a big messy bun perched on top of her head. She dashed into her room to start. She loved her mom. She loved, almost loathed her mom. She was
She set the timer for one minute, grabbed the dark electric blue paintbrush out of the pot. She span around, blue paint splattered everywhere, it went on for about 55 mmore seconds than the timer rang. She repeated with four other colors. Yellow, green, red and gray. It took her five minutes to make the claustrophobic white room a masterpiece filled with colors.
She took the white cover off of the huge windows and stared out over the lake water. It sparkled in the sunlight which was not scarce today, the only cloud in the sky was one little puff by the sun. That was always there. No one else saw it except for Clarice, Stephani???s mom. They both had such strong eyes, they could look directly at the sun without squinting. Her mom always told her she ate a lot of carrots when she was a baby, but Stephani knew she was just joking.
Stephani always wondered why they had such strong eyes. Also, such oddly colored eyes! Her mom and her both had large purple eyes and light blonde hair.
???Hey mom!??? She called out of her rainbow door, her footsteps sounded weird on the tarp covering the floor.
???What?! You need help painting?!???
???No.???
???What then?!???
???Come see it, I am done!???
???What?! Yeah right!??? She walker over to Stephani???s door and looked in. ???WOW, it???s??? colorful! I love it!???
"Thanks, mom! Lets start moving in the furniture!??? They went outside to the U-Haul and grabbed my plain white desk. Stephani repeated the painting with her desk, her bed frame and her TV stand. They moved Stephani???s flat screen TV on to her wall when all of the paint was dry. She looked at her newly painted room. All of the colors shot out at her like she was inside of a rainbow of colors and she couldn???t get out, although she doubted that she would ever want to leave her room now. It was a modern fortress, and when she looked outside of the window, she couldn???t escape the vast beauty of the shimmering golden lake and the purple and orange sunset that hung above it like a beautiful painting. But when she looked outside of the other window she saw the beautiful crowded city, a sight that she would much rather see.
???Hey mom. Come see this!???
???OH! You finished your room!??? She chimed as she stepped into my room, wearing a cream colored ruffle dress. ???Yeah, so I heard you have a test tomorrow.???
???Oh yeah, I do. Andy I have a homework project I need to finish, so I need a phonebook for a school project."
"Oh good, finally a use for the one we just got. It is on the counter!"
"Kay, thanks!"
Stephani jogged into the kitchen, well it was more like sprinting because she was in such a hurry. The project was due tomorrow. She had to do a phone interview on tape with a nurse.
She grabbed the phone book and went to N for nurse. She called the number.
"Hello, this is Judy, I am a nurse at Doctara Doctors! How may I help you?" A lady Stephani would say that was twenty four or so answered her call.
"Yeas I have a few questions for you! I am Stephani and I am in my freshman year of high school! I am supposed to interview a nurse for a school project. Would you be that nurse?"
"Sure!" The nurse replied in her honey sweet voice.
???Thank you! Okay question number one! How do you deal with the blood????
???Oh, I am fine! Sometimes if there is way too much I get a little scared but other than that I am good!???
Their question and answer interview went on for another fifteen minutes or so.
???Thanks!??? I chanted, happy that that was over with.
???Anytime,??? I head a click. She flipped her phone shut. She stared at the phonebook on her bed in front of her. I flipped to the white pages and looked up my last name, Lovei. Nothing. ???Hmmm! That???s odd...??? The words slowly dripped out of my mouth like thick maple syrup. I went to our phonebook closet and pulled out all the white pages. I searched through all of them and I couldn???t find my name.
Whatever.
She looked at her clock which sat beside her bed. It was 11:00 at night. She had to get to bed, which meant that it was the end of another day.
The end of the day was always her thinking time. She was to busy during the day to think about anything that didn???t have to do with school work. Unless she was at her half time job, Safeway. Than all she could think about was; ???Hello, How are you today???? and ???Paper or Plastic???? and sometimes ???I am sorry your credit card was declined.??? Or if she was on stock duty; ???Hey Tom, We have a shortage of peaches!??? or ???Holy Crap that is a lot of Spanish rice! What the heck is Spanish rice anyway?!??? or sometimes ???Yes, the restroom is over there.???
Tonight she wanted to think more than usual. She wanted to think about why she wasn???t in the phonebook. Why? Maybe it was because she didn???t have a home phone, but that option was not valid because she did have a home phone. Maybe it was because that was my mom???s maiden name, but my mom was never married. She spent a long time thinking of possible reasons but they were all shot down.
But right now, she didn???t want to think. She wanted to research her name and her mom???s name. She went over to her desk, which she had painted to match her room and grabbed her pale white laptop off of her desk and opened up Internet Explorer. She typed in the website google.com. In the search box, she searched her moms name. Nothing came up. She searched her name, still nothing came up on the page. She typed in Office of Birth and found the phone number to the office of births at the hospital her mom told her she was born in. She called the number.
???Office of Births, How may I help you,??? said a nasal voice.
???Yes, I am looking for a birth record from nineteen ninety four! The last name is Lovei. L-O-V-E-I.???
???Okay, one moment.??? The nasal voiced receptionist paused, ???Okay, we have no records of that at our hospital. Do you want me to search the U.S. census for that name????
???Umm, you can do that???? Could she? Stephani didn???t know but anything would help her if it had some proof that she was born. That she wasn???t just made up.
???Yes! I can! I am searching... last name, Lovei.! Okay there is NO records for this name at all. You must have the wrong spelling, goodbye!???
???But-??? she hung up, ???I think I know how to spell my own name!??? Stephani muttered under her breath, annoyed. But that wasn???t the only emotion she was feeling, she was scared. Who was she? Where was she from? She didn???t know her identity, but she would figure it out! So she formed a plan.
*******************************
Stephani???s plan was simple. She would tell her mom she needed her birth certificate for a school project. If her mother gave it to her, she existed. If not, more research would have to continue. She had to do this right now, she couldn???t spend much more time waiting! She was desperate for some sort of proof that she existed!
