Asphodelus is a genus of flowering plants in the asphodel family. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 and was previously part of the lily family. In Greek mythology, the asphodel flower was associated with death, mourning, and the underworld. The souls of most deceased people went to Asphodel Fields, which was the resting place for the majority of ordinary people who lived average lives.
