???Rose! Come on, its time to get up!??? The teen rolled onto her stomach, dead asleep. ???NOW!??? The door shot open with a bang, lights snapped on, and covers ripped from the bed???.???Get up!??? Maria screamed, snatching the pillow and tossing it in a corner???
???Mum???.??? Rose groaned, ???I told you not to do that??????
???Up!??? She barked, grabbing the laundry basket on the way out.
Rose was left sitting on her stripped bed staring at the off-white paint covering her wall. Her auburn tresses were a mess, and her jade eyes squinted in the morning light. Maria stuck her head in the doorway once more. ???I don???t see any movement,??? she chided.
???I???m comin??? I???m comin????????? Rose sat up groggily, and gazed about her room. Books littered the carpet and her desk cluttered with papers, while the neglected rubbish bin sat in the corner overflowing. She slid off her four poster twin bed and rummaged through her dresser, pulling out a pair of blue jeans and a cerulean t-shirt that depicted haphazard designs. Stumbling off to the bathroom at a snails pace, her day began. As she waited for the water to warm up, she stared in the mirror, and a timid 17 year old stared back, almost as if taunting her. Rose the book worm, the invisible girl, the freak???.She frowned, dreading the first day of school??? She hopped in the shower, letting the steaming water run down her face, merging with her tears.
Maria was just getting ready to leave for work when Rose finally emerged from the bathroom. ???Hurry up! You have half an hour before the bus comes!??? With that she slammed the door behind her. Rose watched through the window as her only family climbed into their white Sudan and pulled out of the driveway. She gave a half-hearted wave, but her mother didn???t return the goodbye.
Pouring herself a bowl of cereal, she seated herself at their ???table,??? which consisted of a few wooden boards atop a metal crate. Fifteen minutes went by and she hadn???t even touched her spoon???Getting up she grabbed her bag off a hook by the door and headed for the bus stop. Walking down a quarter of a mile down her road, Harp Trail, she stopped in front of a two story module. It looked very nice compared to her brick address which only contains four rooms, two bedrooms, a bathroom, and the kitchen. ???Great,??? she thought, ???now I have to stare at this the rest of the year.???
Turning to face the road, Rose calmly waited for her ride to torment to arrive. A pair of hands grabbed her sides; she jumped and swiveled around to find Jessica, one of the last people she would ever want to see. ???I???m sorry, did I scare you???? she giggled as she burst out laughing. To Rose???s relief the bus pulled up and she gladly boarded, sliding into a seat near the front.
Walking down the hallways was like trying to walk through a war zone. Rose slipped into Ms. Halloway???s class, and took a seat near the back. Slowly students started filing in as the minutes ticked by. As the last person entered the bell rang, and everyone took their seats. Ms. Halloway was an older lady and a bit over weight, but even so the students were quiet enough to hear her going through the attendance list.
???Jimmie Hall????
???Here.???
???Katie Hatter????
???Here.??? Rose knew her name would be called soon. She stared at the teacher???s face intently.
???Matt Juni????
???Present.???
???Rose Kitera????
???Here ma???am??? Rose replied, some turned to look at her???
???Why does she sound weird???? she watched someone whisper.
???Maybe she???s a sped?????? she saw his friend reply. At this Rose was infuriated, she was tired of this.
???Maybe it???s because I???ve never heard the sound of a human voice!??? She got up and ran from the room, tears streaming down her face. Out of all the things she was, she wished she wasn???t one thing??? something that could silence the world for her???she was deaf.
Mm me what you think!
